LIGHTHOUSE ART HOTEL COMPETITION
We imagine the lighthouse as a cultural destination, a landmark in the artistic network of Sicily. With its diverse programmatic activities, the proposal offers exhibition spaces accompanied by workshops and accommodation units, so that the visitor can enjoy a holistic experience of the artistic process. The brief responds to artists who can live, work and exhibit on site as well as to external visitors who have an interest in becoming part of this community. The lighthouse stands as the reference point around which the proposal is structured. Three thematic clusters (Art-Work-Life) are loosely organised around the existing buildings, in existential micro-volumes. The boundary between ruin and new-build is renegotiated, as new spaces are interweaved along the old ones. The hefty yet lightweight canopy brings all these diverse activities wrapped under the same envelope, offering a bold identity to our intervention. Behaving partly as roof and as facade, it refers simultaneously to the tightness of castle formations as well as to the porosity of the landscape. Its materiality, that of unvarnished weathering steel, deals with the notions of time and age while it nods to the imagery of washed out shipwrecks and to the aesthetics of Arte Povera. The subtropical climate of the south Mediterranean, characterised by mild winters and very warm summers, make cooling the most dominant and challenging issue, due to the strong solar radiation and to the high ambient temperature. Therefore thermal insulation on the buildings’ envelope coupled with highly reflective coating is applied, and combined with internal shading devices, high performance glazing and passive cooling, achieve a reduction in cooling energy requirements by 63%. A further 6% decrease is obtained by the shading effect of the 95% recycled Cor-Ten steel perforated envelope, which provides shading creates a microclimate in the surrounding area.
